Beaches

1. Rethymnon Beach[ map ]

Long organized sandy beach more than 20 kilometers, stretching from the town of Rethymno and to the east areas of Perivolia, Platanes, Adelianos Kampos, Skaleta.

2.Episkopi Beach  [ map ]

Long sandy beach in the west of the city of Rethymno, partly organized.

4. Πλακιάς [ Χάρτης ]

The village of Plakias situated 40 km. South of Rethymno, with a wonderful sandy beach and extensive infrastructure includes taverns and restaurants. The organized beach offers both bathing and various water sports.

8. Lake of Prevelis [ map ]

Located 38 km. South of Rethymno, shortly before the historic Preveli monastery, following a  road that reaches up to a point and moving then walk for about 15 minutes, you arrive at the beautiful sandy beach with palm trees, right at the mouth of the river Kourtaliotis.

9. Triopetra [ map ]

Triopetra beach named after the three distinctive rocks in the sea, is located about 50 km. South of Rethymnon.

10. Agia Galini [ map ]

Agia Galini is a resort 58 km. South of Rethymnon.

11. Korakas [ χάρτης ]

Located south of Rethymno, 42 km. from Rethymno. 

Museums

• Archaeological Museum
  The Archaeological Museum of Rethymnon is housed in a building right at the entrance of the Fortezza. It houses exhibits from excavations held in the prefecture of Rethymnon, presenting the history of the area from the paleolithic till the Roman times.
• Πινακοθήκη ” Λ. Κανακάκι “
  Η Δημοτική Πινακοθήκη “Λ.Κανακάκις” ιδρύθηκε το 1992. Από την αρχή στεγάστηκε σε ένα ενετικό κτίριο, στην καρδιά της παλιάς ιστορικής πόλης του Ρεθύμνου, κάτω από τη Φορτέτσα και το Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο. (Χειμάρας 5).

• Historical and Folklore Museum
  The Historical and Folklore Museum of Rethymnon was established in 1973 and it is housed in an elegant Venetian building. The exhibits of the museum come of private collections and donations. They include traditional clothing, tools, ceramics, jewelry, coins and other items.Vernandou street Rethymno  28-30.

• Ecclesiastical Museum Location
  Established in 1994, the Ecclesiastical Museum of Rethymnon is housed in the Cathedral of the town. It exhibits rare items from various churches of the region.
• Military Museum

  Villa Claudio, a lovely mansion of Venetian architecture, was recently restored and it now houses an interesting Military Museum. This museum was inaugurated in May 2010 and hosts military uniforms, weapons of various ages and army vehicles in the yard.

 

Archaeological sites

In the entire area of Rethymno identified archaeological remains dating from the Stone Age to the Roman and early Christian times.

The number of identified archaeological sites reaches 350 of whom of course are not many visited.

• Eleftherna
  Ancient Eleftherna is located 25km southeast of Rethymno, close to the Monastery of Arkadi. The town is the most important archaeological site in the prefecture of Rethymno, which has not fully been excavated and it is expected to give archaeologists many more discoveries. The first organized excavations here started in 1985 by the University of Crete.The town of Eleftherna was founded by the Dorians around the 9th century BC and was inhabited up to the early Byzantine years. To this long course contributed its strategic location at an altitude of 380m, crossed by the roads that connected the ancient Cydonia, Knossos and Ida Mount. The findings so far have been found in three different positions of the same hill.
